What’s the difference between Cinematography / Video Production and Videography?

Cinematography and Video Production are more complex and planned than Videography.

Videography is the art of capturing the world the way it is, mostly in real-time with natural lighting. Weddings, dance recitals, sporting events and corporate events are great examples.

Cinematography is the art of creating a world using photography and visual storytelling in a motion picture or television. Cinematography comprises all on-screen visual elements, including lighting, framing, composition, camera motion, camera angles, lens choices, depth of field, zoom, focus, color, exposure, and filtration.

There are three main stages of video production: Pre-production, Production and Post-production.

Pre-production

Scripting, storyboarding and location scouting are three of the main elements of pre-production.

Determining the message you want to convey to your target audience and the structure of how you will deliver that message is taken care of during the scripting process.

Storyboarding provides a visual layout of events as they are to be seen through the camera lens, such as camera movements and scene lighting to name a few. This important process helps visualize the scenes and find potential problems before they occur.

Filming locations are used to fulfill the vision and aesthetics of the final production. Depending on the scope of your project, more than one location might be necessary.

Production

During the production stage, the scenes are filmed on location using professional video, lighting and audio equipment. Using different camera angles, camera movements and other techniques, the footage needed to convey the story of your project are captured before moving on to the post-production stage.

Post-production

Back in the editing suite, we selectively combine the captured footage through the use of video editing, color correction and color grading to create a finished product that captures the mood of your story and communicates your message.

What is color correction?

Color correction is a technical process that fixes color issues and makes footage appear as naturalistic as possible. The idea is for colors to look clean and real, as human eyes would see them in the real world. Color correction smooths out the color from shot to shot and giving the video a more contiguous feel, allowing the viewer to focus on the story.

What is color grading?

Once your footage is color corrected, it's time to bring it in for color grading. That's where things get more tricky. The color grading process adds atmosphere and emotion to shots by coloring footage in new, often unnatural ways.

Color grading: This sample footage shows a few different looks that can be added to the original color corrected footage to set a tone, add emotion or suggest a location.
